Burnie’s Australia Day Celebrations
Next date: Wednesday, 26 January 2022 | 10:20 AM
On January 26, Burnie City Council invite members of the community to come together to reflect, respect and celebrate – because we’re all part of the story.
Burnie’s Australia Day ceremony will be held in the Town Hall at the Burnie Arts & Function Centre on Wednesday, 26 January 2022 from 10:20am.
This year we welcome Special Guests Her Excellency the Honourable Barbara Baker AC, Governor of Tasmania and Emeritus Professor Don Chalmers AO.
The program includes a Citizenship Ceremony as well as the presentation of Burnie’s Citizen of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year and Community Event of the Year awards.
Entertainment will be provided by the City of Burnie Brass Band and Josie Riches and David Wood.
Burnie City Council Mayor Steve Kons said “On Australia Day we celebrate Australia and its people and reflect on our Australian values of freedom, respect, equality, and a fair go that make our country such a great place to live.”
“Australia Day 2022 will provide an important opportunity for the Burnie Community to reflect on the challenges of the past year, respect the sacrifices and contributions of those who continually respond in a time of need and celebrate being together and being Australian.”
“Australia Day is also a day to reflect on our nation’s past – a history which began more than 65,000 years ago with the First Australians – the world’s oldest living culture. It is also a day on which we respect and share the stories, histories and contributions of everyday Australians, because we’re all part of the story of Australia.”
“We hope that we will have extra reason to celebrate this year as we eagerly await the announcement of the 2022 Australian of the Year Awards which will be announced on the Australia Day Eve in Canberra. We wish Burnie’s Craig Leeson (2022 TAS Australian of the Year) and Bruce French AO, (2022 TAS Senior Australian of the Year) as well as Wynyard’s Kaytlyn Johnson (2022 TAS Young Australian of the Year) all the best.”
This is a free event and all members of our community are very welcome to attend. Refreshments will be provided following the ceremony. COVID-19 requirements will be strictly adhered to and patrons will be required to wear a mask and follow social distancing rules.
Please note that Celebrations will be Live Streamed. The page will be updated with the view link 1 week prior to the event.
