Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day Lest we forget

On Saturday 11 November, we will once again come together to remember and pay our respects to those who gave their lives, fighting to protect our nation.

Under the Cenotaph in Burnie Park, on the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month – we will remember them.

At the conclusion of this year’s Remembrance Day ceremony, the President of the RSL Burnie Branch will invite Corporal Cameron Baird’s father, Doug Baird and the Mayor Teeny Brumby to announce the official renaming of the internal road in Burnie Park, to Corporal Cameron Baird VC MG Drive, and unveil the new memorial sign.

In January 2023, the Council unanimously supported Cr. Justin Graves’ proposal to further recognize Corporal Cameron Baird by naming the road in Burnie Park in his honor. Placenames Tasmania stated that the proposed name, ‘Corporal Cameron Baird VC MG Drive’ did not comply with the requirements of the guidelines.

The Council were disappointed with this outcome and felt there was nothing further that could be done to resolve this matter.  Since that time several community members and organisations have encouraged the Burnie City Council to continue to progress this important issue.

Corporal Cameron Baird was Burnie born and raised. He made the ultimate sacrifice for his mates and for his country. The Burnie community is very supportive in appropriately recognizing Cameron, his family, and his legacy.  Therefore, Burnie City Council decided that it would proceed with naming the internal road at Burnie Park, of its own accord.

The Remembrance Day service will be held at the Cenotaph in Burnie Park on 11 November, commencing at 10.40am
