Sports and Recreation

Burnie is an inclusive and healthy community. Whether participating or spectating, residents and visitors can access a number of excellent sporting and recreational facilities.

The Burnie Tennis club offers 16 hard court tennis court, and hosts the popular Burnie International in late January each year.  West Park Oval is a beautifully maintained ground, home to Aussie Rules and cricket, and also features a cycling track.  West Park Oval has hosted events such as the Women’s Big Bash League and the historic annual New Year’s Day Carnival.

The Burnie Aquatic Centre features both indoor and outdoor facilities allowing for all year use.  The McKenna Park Hockey Complex features an international standard synthetic pitch.  Fans of lawn bowls are spoilt for choice with several excellent club facilities across the municipality.

Being located on the shore, yachting is catered for with a clubroom and boat launching facilities at South Burnie.  Surf Life Saving is also a vibrant part of the community, with the club facilities located on the Waterfront.

Council Managed Sports Venues

Burnie Aquatic Centre

Built for healthy living and fun, with a 25m indoor pool, a 50m outdoor pool and a kids play area. Managed by Sea-Lyons Aquatics who also run swim, fitness classes and swimming lessons, and inflatables during school holidays.

Acton Recreation Ground

Acton Recreation Ground is suitable for cricket and softball and is the home of the Acton Cricket Club and the Burnie Softball Association.

Montello Recreation Ground

Montello Recreation Ground is the home of the Burnie United Football Club and is suitable for soccer and junior cricket.

Natone Recreation Ground

Home of the Natone Football Club, the Natone Recreation Ground is located on Upper Natone Road.

Ridgley Recreation Ground

Home of the Ridgley Cricket and Football Clubs, the Ridgley Recreation Ground also hosts one off events such as the Ute Muster.

Burnie Sports Centre

The Burnie Sports Centre is located 1.5km from the city centre and regularly hosts a variety of sports.

Skate Park

Skate Park catering for skateboarders, in-line skaters, BMX riders and rollerskates. Home to many youth-orientated events such as the Know Your Odds Skate, Scooter and BMX Series.

Stowport Recreation Ground

Home of the Stowport Cricket Club, the Stowport Recreation Ground is located beside the Stowport Hall on Stowport Road.

Upper Burnie Recreation Ground

Upper Burnie Recreation Ground is the home of the Burnie Rugby Club and is suitable for rugby and touch football.

West Park Oval and Cycling Track

West Park Oval and Cycling Track is home to both Australian Rules football and cricket facilities, as well as cycling and athletics.

Wivenhoe Recreation Ground

Home of the Burnie Harness Racing Club and the South Burnie Football and Cricket Clubs, the Wivenhoe Recreation Ground boasts gorgeous views over Bass Strait.
