Council received news on 21 July 2021 that it had been successful in its application for funding to improve the Mount Street/Three Mile Line Road/Atkins Drive intersection in Upper Burnie.

The federal government announced that it will provide $500,000 through its 2021–22 Black Spot Program, with Council contributing $175,000.

Burnie City Council Mayor Steve Kons said “Council applied for the blackspot funding on the basis of accident history. This intersection has been a concern to the community for many years.

“Council’s preferred option is a roundabout and we will liaise with the State Government to progress the most appropriate traffic safety outcome. The works will certainly alleviate the school's and the residents' problems.”

Council look forward to beginning work on the design aspects of the project in this financial year.
