BRAG - More than 1000 hearts
Published on 11 July 2019
Sarah De Jonge, Founder of the 1000 Hearts international kindness project will host a workshop at the Burnie Regional Art Gallery on Tuesday, 16 July 2019 from 10 am to 12 noon.
Sarah, who has been impressed by Burnie’s efforts, said “Kindness is addictive. At 1000 Hearts we practice kindness to self and others through the mindful creation and sharing of eco-friendly pocket hearts. “
Supported by the Emu Bay Lions Club and created by a small but dedicated group of stitchers, close to
2000 hearts have been made and distributed in Burnie since November 2018. During that time other groups have joined in including high school students, National JobLink volunteers, and school holiday program families in both Burnie and Zeehan. The hearts are freely available from the Burnie Regional Art Gallery and Museum. Hearts have also been shared with new students to UTAS, the Rural Clinical School, the Cancer Centre Wellness Room at the North West Regional Hospital, with members of the Emu Bay Lions Club and at the International Women’s Day luncheon. Visitors are welcome to take a heart to keep or share.
Mayor Steve Kons said: “Visitors to the gallery and museum are encouraged to take a free heart to remind them of their visit. The hearts were very popular with cruise ship visitors last season and social media reports are that the hearts from Burnie have ended up as far away as Canada, the USA, the UK and Greece.”
The workshop on 16 July is free but spaces are limited so please RSVP to Janine Morris, Project Officer at the Gallery on 6430 5875 or firstname.lastname@example.org. You can also let us know you will be joining on the Gallery’s Facebook page.
The Burnie Regional Art Gallery is open free to the public from 10 am to 4.30 pm weekdays and from 1.30pm to 4 pm Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.
The Burnie Regional Art Gallery is a Burnie City Council initiative and is assisted through Arts Tasmania by the Minister for the Arts.
