Council partner with 7BU & Sea FM to hold the Burnie Christmas Parade

The Burnie City Council is delighted to announce that it has partnered with 7BU and Sea FM to deliver a new reimagined Burnie Christmas Parade.  The Parade will be held at 11am on Sunday 12 December at the Wivenhoe Recreation Ground and of course will be different this year as we take account of the pandemic challenges.

Harry Badcock from Sea FM said “This year the 7BU & 101.7 Sea FM Burnie Christmas Parade will run in reverse! We've had to think outside the box and come up with a COVID safe way of putting on this fantastic family favourite event. You're probably thinking ‘what do they mean it will be in reverse’? This year the floats will be stationary and the event attendees will be in their vehicles doing the driving by.

“All floats will be set up around the Wivenhoe Recreation Ground and the public will be encouraged to book a ticket within the time they would like to attend, the ticket will allow patrons to drive through the recreation grounds to check out the fantastic floats onsite. Parade times will be staggered to allow patrons plenty of time to enjoy the parade at their leisure.

“Float organisers are now invited to submit their applications. This year the floats will be required to stay within their allocated zone but because the Christmas Parade is stationary this means that organisers too can think outside the box and come up with a fun stationary display. Different setup options to consider might be; in a car, trailer, bus, truck, caravan or you could set up under a marquee or directly under the sun.”

Burnie City Council Mayor Steve Kons said “The Council recently sought Expressions of Interest to partner with an organisation to hold the Christmas Parade as we appreciate on the back of a few challenging years with COVID, that this is one event that is really important to the community, particularly when many other Christmas Parades are unfortunately being cancelled.  We are therefore thrilled to be partnering with 7BU and Sea FM to bring this valued community event to life. We would like to thank everyone who submitted their interest in holding the Parade and congratulate 7BU/SeaFM on their successful application.

“Council recently changed its events model to be a funder and enabler of events through partnerships with organisations and groups, as opposed to the former model where Council provided these events directly. The model will see new and exciting event ideas come to fruition, and provides the ability for Council to provide the ability for individuals and community groups to grow their capacity to commission and conduct successful events such as the 7BU & Sea FM Christmas Parade.

“In November, Council will be releasing a new Community Grants Program that will provide opportunities for events to be delivered in this way for the upcoming 2022-23 year.  At this time a range of other grant opportunities will also be released, so please watch this space!”

Applications for floats close on 8th November 2021

Due to the limited space available for floats onsite at this year’s Christmas Parade not all applicants will be able to have the size they request.
