Temporary Closure of Burnie Arts Facilities

Published on 22 March 2020

The Burnie City Council have decided to close its three arts facilities, the Burnie Arts & Function Centre, Burnie Regional Art Gallery and the Burnie Regional Museum, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The facilities will not be open from tomorrow morning, Monday 23 March, until further notice.

Burnie City Council Mayor Steve Kons said, “This action has been taken due to the latest restrictions put in place by the Prime Minister yesterday regarding indoor spaces, as well as a precaution to protect our staff and visitors to the centres.

“The fact that all three facilities have experienced cancellation of bookings or expect to see drops in visitor numbers has also contributed to this decision.

“Normal maintenance and operational activities will continue at all three facilities.

"There are some steps that we, as a local council, can take in the interests of the health and wellbeing of our community and employees and the temporary closure of these facilities is one of those steps.

"This is a rapidly changing situation and we're seeking to be proactive in reducing risks in our community, as well as planning to continue to provide important services to residents.

"Council will continue to keep the community informed as we work through those challenges."
