Burnie Youth Council Art Challenge 2019
Published on 14 August 2019
The annual Burnie Youth Council Art Challenge will be held again this October and will showcase 2D, 3D and photographic works by students from kinder to college from the Burnie region.
The Youth Challenge will run from 3pm to 5pm daily during the week of 28th October to the 1st November at Studio2 Eleven, 211 Mount Street, Upper Burnie.
Burnie City Council Mayor Steve Kons said “We have had a positive response from schools and are expecting a significant number of entries this year. We hope to see a diverse range of work in each of the categories that will make for an extremely interesting and engaging experience."
“Last year entries into the challenge filled the studio, and families attended the openings during the week from 3-5pm every day, with the final Friday night seeing a capacity crowd for the awards ceremony.”
One of the highlights of the award night on the Friday 1st November is The ‘Rising Star Art Award’, instigated by retired teachers Sandra Henderson and Bob Lubout. The senior award for students in years 8, 9 and 10 is a certificate and gift voucher to the value of $100. The junior award is a certificate and $50 gift voucher and is awarded to young artists who produces a piece of work which shows outstanding creativity and technical skills.
Young people are encouraged to think about their works and our relationship with forests in their planning for this year’s challenge. Forico, Tasmania’s largest sustainable plantation forestry management company, has added a special category of awards for work that associates plantation timber with what occurs on farms, employment, animals, landscape diversity or the coexisting of forest types. This is a broader category than first appears and really allows you to get creative, particularly when it comes to 3D art.
The winners will be announced on Friday 1st November from 4pm to 6pm at Studio 2 Eleven in Upper Burnie and will then be displayed at the Burnie Regional Art Gallery from Tuesday, 5th November to Thursday 21st November 2019.
