Burnie Youth Council
The Burnie Youth Council has been running successfully for the past 13 years. It is a Special Committee of the Burnie City Council and is coordinated by the Council’s Youth Development team.
Each year two students from each school in the Burnie municipality are nominated by their school to become a Youth Councillor. These representatives are then asked to nominate for the positions of Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor and Junior Deputy Mayor.
Being a Youth Councillor provides young people with the opportunity to learn about how Local Government works, develop leadership skills, learn more about their local community and participate in a range of community projects. The Council meets regularly in the Burnie City Council Chambers, participates in tours of Council's land and buildings and also provide advice and recommendations to big Council around issues and topics concerning our community.
Youth Councillors are also asked to represent Burnie at events such as Tasmanian Youth Forums, conferences and to assist with welcoming or showing around special visitors to Burnie.
