The stark architectural lines of Burnie's newest visitor attraction mark the end of West Beach. Makers' Workshop was designed by a young Tasmanian architect and opened in November 2009. It houses a fascinating story of Burnie's industrial heritage and its links to all things paper from the heady days of the Pulp to the boutique hand made paper operation here today. Tours depart every 45 minutes and participants get a greater understanding of the paper making process. Try your hand at meshing fibres, watermarking, making your own unique paper, or find out why roo poo and wombat scats make such great paper.
At any time you may see other artists working on site including wood turners, print makers, paper artists, milliners, fibre artists, bead makers or many more. Their work along with other Tasmanian artists and makers can be seen the shop and gallery.
Great coffee and food is an essential part of any Tasmanian experience and the Makers' Workshop licensed café can cater for groups and individuals with fresh simple fare in a modern environment, surrounded by wonderful artworks and gorgeous views of Bass Strait and Burnie’s favourite beach.
For the best local knowledge you can ask at the visitor information centre about the road ahead or what’s happening today. Entry into Makers' Workshop is free, charges apply to tours, goods and services. Groups should pre-book. Everyone Welcome.
