ArtRage 08

Leaving

'Leaving' - digital print

16 May - 12 July 2009

ArtRage 2008 is a vibrant exhibition of artwork by students from schools and colleges around the state.

The annual ArtRage series of exhibitions was established in 1994 as an initiative of the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery. The exhibition now tours to Burnie and Hobart each year.

The work in this exhibition is selected from submissions of the top strand of portfolios (Stage 5) of Year 11 and 12 students from all the schools and colleges throughout the state.

The expansion of skills, the focus of ideas and the development of a strong individual style are qualities that are assessed in the art-marking process. Originality is also important.

The TCE art examiners thought it would be fascinating for the general public and educational for future art students to also see one full body of work reflecting 150 hours study throughout the year.

This year the collection of work is by Madeline O'Connor from Scotch Oakburn College, and her exploration into the discipline of printmaking shows a passion for, and high skill level in, intaglio printing. Madeline has used cardboard collagraph plates, printed in the same way as an etching then the prints are hand-coloured. In some cases patterned paper has been applied to the surface. The results are delicate yet compelling and make the viewer more aware of the intricate, intimate relationship between women and hair.

ArtRage receives enormous cooperation from students and teachers. The Tasmanian School of Art, Centre for the Arts in Hobart will also display the students' work. This will ensure that ArtRage will be accessible to an enthusiastic audience statewide.

Starting with Gwenda Boyd Chooses, this is the second of a new series of exhibitions showcasing works from the collection of the Burnie Regional Art Gallery selected by personalities from  the community. Both men are well-known state politicians from different sides of the fence, both based in Burnie.

Will Brett Whiteley choose Brett Whiteley and who will be chosen by Steve Kons?

Ha! High Art 09 Exhibitions 1 to 4

March to 12 July 2009

The Burnie Regionl Art Gallery will be continuing on throughout the year with the exciting new series of exhibitions from the High Art series, or Ha! for short, showcasing the best talent from six high schools and colleges in Burnie, Ulverstone, Penguin and Yolla.

Art teachers from the schools and colleges have all been enthusiastic in their support of the exhibition series, a part of the gallery's new audience development thrust. The schools are happy for the opportunity to show to a wider public the work of their best students and the gallery is delighed that this will bring more young people into the space.

"We have wonderful spaces," says Greg Leong, the Gallery Director, "including a large gallery, a smaller rear gallery and then two other spaces which we are now going to use more proactively to involve different people and groups from the community."

"These are the Printmakers' Gallery and the foyer space. Almost three years ago, the Court Gallery was re-named the Printmakers' Gallery and was dedicated to the display of prints from our excellent collection of works on paper. While this is a terrific idea, I think we should expand its use again, together with the foyer space, for exhibitions that are collaborations with the community so we can attract greater, and importantly, different audiences."

School exhibitions scheduled for the first six months of the year as as follows:

High Art 09/01  Hellyer College 27 March - 19 April
 High Art 09/02  Penguin High School - 24 April - 17 May
High Art 09/03  Burnie High School 22 May - 14 June
High Art 09/04  Yolla District High School 19 June - 12 July
