The Port of Burnie is Tasmania's largest general cargo port and Australia's largest container port. It is the nearest Tasmanian port to Melbourne. It is fog free and there are no restrictions on night movements. The port is equipped with VHS-R?T, operating in the international maritime bands. Berths range up to 219 metres in length and berth depths are from 10.0 to 11.5 metres.
The port is equipped to handle all types of cargo. This includes containers, general cargo, dry bulk, bulk liquids, woodchips, logs and livestock. A comprehensive fleet of mechanical handling equipment is available, including container handling forklifts of up to 30 tonnes capacity.
Heavy fuel oil and diesel oil are available, delivered by road tankers. An 80-tonne capacity Post Panamax single lift portainer crane is situated on the No. 6 Berth and a 65-tonne capacity twin lift portainer is situated on the No. 7 Berth. Fresh water is readily available. For repairs, engineering firms with extensive workshops are situated nearby. The port provides a full galley waste and rubbish disposal service, including incineration of garbage. Tugs are stationed in the port and are available on request.
