Immunisation
Environmental Health Officers are responsible for organising programs and maintaining immunisation records. The diseases which the Council immunise against are:-
Whooping Cough, Diphtheria, Tetanus, Poliomyelitis, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Pneumococcal, Rotavirus, Meningococcal, Hepatitis B, Varicella, and Human Papilloma Virus.
Immunisation is a very important way of preventing the spread of disease in the community. Immunisation clinics are held on the first Wednesday in each month at the Burnie Civic Centre between 3.00pm and 4.00pm.
Communicable Diseases
Communicable diseases are diseases that can be spread from one person to another. Diseases such as cholera or typhoid require quick and thorough investigation. This usually involves the collection of specimens for laboratory analysis, removal and disposal of infectious materials.
Communicable diseases are spread in a number of ways such as through air or body fluids. For this reason premises such as acupuncturists, tattooists and ear piercing premises are inspected to ensure correct hygiene and sterilisation techniques are carried out by the operators. Swimming pools and spas are also regularly tested for both chemical and microbiological standards.
