Council is required to enforce various State Government Acts in relation to the keeping and control of animals.  These Acts include the:

• Dog Control Act and Regulations;
• Local Government Act;
• Local Government Highways Act; and
• Local Government (Building and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act.

Also the following consultation with the community Council has enacted local laws in relation to animals.

Although Council in many instances has a legal responsibility to ensure the well being of animals it works closely with the RSPCA, Tasmanian Canine Defence League (Burnie Dogs Home) and other groups.
