Cruise Ship Visits
Since 1987, Burnie has had 87 cruise ships visit, bringing over 168,000 passengers and crew to visit the City and wider region. 91 % of these visitors have been in the last five years as Burnie City Council and Burnie Sports and Events have concentrated their efforts on attracting the Cruise Ship market.
Many visitors choose to stay in the City and look around, while others choose to take up tourism options further in the north-west region for the day.
The Cruise Ship season in Burnie has developed into an integral and valuable part of the region’s tourism economy. Burnie now attracts between 15–25 ships each season, bringing an estimated $8 million into the regional economy through direct spending.
During the 2011/2012 season, 18 cruise ships will visit Burnie. The first Cruise Ship will arrive on October 1st 2011, followed by 2 ships in November, 4 in December, 7 in February, 2 in March and 2 in April 2012.
