State Government Acts

Council is required to enforce various State Government Acts in relation to the keeping and control of animals.

These Acts can be accessed from the Tasmanian Legislation Website and include the:

  • Dog Control Act 2000 and Regulations;
  • Local Government Act 1993;
  • Local Government (Highways) Act 1982; and
  • Local Government (Building and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1993.

Following consultation with the community Council has enacted local laws in relation to animals as described in the Dog Management Policy.

Although Council in many instances has a legal responsibility to ensure the well being of animals it works closely with the RSPCA, Tasmanian Canine Defence League (Burnie Dogs Home) and other groups.

Further information on Dog Management is available from:

  • The Department of Premier and Cabinet Dog Control Site including information on microchipping, general dog control issues, dangerous dogs, restricted breeds, de-sexing.
