Burnie is pleased to host the Queen’s Baton Relay as part of its journey to the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in April 2018.

The Queen’s Baton Relay takes a message from Her Majesty The Queen around the Commonwealth to the Opening Ceremony of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) will be staged from 4-15 April 2018.

The Queen’s Baton will be in Burnie on Wednesday, 7 February 2018. The Queen’s Baton Relay is the longest and most accessible in history, travelling a record 388 days and 230,000km around the world. In Australia, the Queen’s Baton will traverse 40,000km travelling through every state and territory for 100 days.

The Relay

The Relay will start at Wivenhoe at 4.48pm and will travel along Bass Highway and Wilson Street, completing its journey at the Burnie Surf Life Saving Club at 5.27pm. A copy of the map is attached. Details of batonbearers can be found at https://www.gc2018.com/qbr

Road Closures  

Please be aware of slow moving traffic along Bass Highway during the Relay. A road closure will be in place for Wilson Street from 5.15pm to 5.30pm. Traffic will be held as the convoy approaches and the road will reopen once the convoy has passed. Traffic will be managed by Tasmania Police, Council and SES. The community are requested to follow the directions given by the Police and traffic controllers.

Basalt Column Car Park Closure

The Basalt Column Car Park will be closed all day on Wednesday, 7 February 2018.

Community Celebration

Come on down and cheer on our batonbearers and join in the free sausage sizzle to celebrate the Relay. The celebrations commence from 5.00pm and will be held at the Burnie Surf Life Saving Club.
