The free vaccine is available for young people aged
6 weeks up to 21 years
(people born after 1 August 1997)

The free vaccine protects against the A, C, W and Y strains of meningococcal disease. The vaccine is also available from GPs, and some pharmacies.

If you had the vaccine last year or earlier this year at school, your GP or a pharmacy you do not require another one.

The Department of Health has provided the following information - “People with meningococcal disease often get very sick, very quickly. Symptoms include fever, severe aches and pains, headache, drowsiness, confusion. Infants can be distressed, limp, pale and feed poorly. If you or your child have seen a doctor but have become worse, please go back to your doctor or emergency department. Don’t wait.”

Burnie City Council will continue to work with the State Department of Health and Human Services to improve community awareness on the risks of meningococcal, and to improve the level of immunisation and protection.  Council will continue to delivered school based meningococcal immunisation program to all students in the eligible age groups; and will assist the Department in organising and delivering wider access to the meningococcal vaccine through a community clinic on the northwest coast for all persons born after 1 August 1997.
