Work is set to start Monday 3 October on the West Park Grove/Bass Highway intersection upgrade.

Mayor Alvwyn Boyd said, “We can today announce Shaw Contracting as the successful tenderer for this project.

“Council staff have worked very hard preparing for this project and spent a lot of time working in community consultation and it will be wonderful to finally see work begin to improve this busy intersection.”
Works on this intersection will be conducted in stages, to least affect the community.

“The first stage will be relocating the grandstand seating that runs along the Bass Highway on West Park Oval. We are working on this first so that this work will be complete in time for the big one day cricket match in November.

“From there the works will begin near the Makers’ Workshop, again to least impact the community.

“The final stages will be on the Bass Highway with works conducted after the morning rush and finished before people head home in the evening rush. Road works can be frustrating, we understand that and we are taking every measure appropriate to try and alleviate the impact on the community.”

The intersection upgrade is set to be complete by late April. The upgrade will see the intersection become a four way intersection with a dedicated left turn lane to West Park Grove and right turn lane into the West Park precinct.

“Vehicles that park on the land around the Makers’ Workshop and walk to work will have to move their vehicles a little further away. As works progress to that area it will be fenced off, however there is plenty of free parking available 50 metres away near the band rooms towards the ocean at West Park.

“Its great that so many people are parking and walking, we hope they continue to do this and utilise the free parking space at the north of the West Park precinct.”
