Supportive of the decision for the Tarkine

Burnie Mayor Steve Kons is pleased with the announcement from Federal Environment Minister, Tony Burke MP to include only listing the indigenous values of the Tarkine on the National Heritage List.

Mayor Steve Kons said, “Burnie City Council desires to see the Tarkine as an area that balances the conservation of the environment with the need for the forest industry, the mining industry and the tourism industry.

“This seems to be a fair and sensible outcome. Mr Burke has listened to a very vibrant debate of recent times and I think he has made a good call.”

Burnie City Council wrote to the Federal Environment Minister, Tony Burke MP last year to show support for development in the Tarkine area.

Mayor Kons said, “This decision provides both protection of heritage areas and still allows for the possibility of creating employment opportunities, which we desperately need. More importantly it provides confidence for investment in these important industry sectors.

“The community should be proud of how they expressed their views on this area and have now have contributed to our future. I am very keen to see development in this area, as long as these developments comply with the conditions placed upon them.”
