Start preparing your paper garment

Burnie City Council is now calling for entries for its annual Paper Clothing and Paper Mask Competition.

Deputy Mayor Sandra French said, “This competition is extremely popular. Each year we receive more entries and the products become more outstanding. Using paper based products, the entrants are asked to make life size garments and or masks.

“There is always a range of paper products used. We have seen toilet paper, food wrappers, labels from cans of bottles or newspapers used, just to name a few.”

This is an amateur competition and excludes participants with a formal tertiary or other dressmaking qualifications as this may create an unfair advantage.

Completed entries must be delivered to the Makers' Workshop from Monday 20 of May 2013 until 24 of May 2013. A form to be attached to your work can be downloaded at

Early or late entries will not be accepted. There are two prize categories to enter. They are individual design or group design. The competition has different age ages categories to enter in.

  • 7 to 12 years
  • 13 to 18 years
  • 18 years and over

All Paper Clothing entries will be on display for public viewing at the Makers' Workshop throughout June.

“The month of May might seem along time away, but paper is extremely delicate and I know that there will certainly be numerous attempts before you finish your garment or mask.

“Now is the time to start designing and playing around. Good luck!” Aldermen French said.
