Sets by the Sea Update

Burnie City Council has today announced that it is unable to provide a permit for the Sets by the Sea event scheduled to be held at Council’s West Beach reserve on 10 December 2016.

Burnie City Council General Manager Andrew Wardlaw said, “Council has met with the event organiser on a number of occasions to discuss all the requirements that are needed in order for an event such as this to occur. We have clearly set out all the requirements and they have been given every opportunity to work with us to gain the appropriate permits, however the information that has been received to date does not adequately satisfy all the legislative and safety requirements.”

“It is imperative that all the appropriate arrangements are in place, in order to ensure the safety of everyone involved, and at this point in time, this is not the case.”

“The information provided to date does not provide the level of clarity or confidence which is required for the Council to adequately meet its duty of care to the community. While the organiser has been able to obtain some permits, issues still remain regarding broader risk management and community safety.”

Burnie City Council Mayor Anita Dow said, “Council is disappointed that this event will not be going ahead on the 10th of December, but we have an important duty of care to ensure the safety and well-being of our residents and visitors to our city. We must be satisfied that the organisers of this event will be able to adequately meet the legislative and safety requirements needed.”

“We have not asked the organiser to do anything that we would not expect of ourselves, or any other party wishing to use the reserve.”

“Council shares its responsibility for the safety and well-being of the community with other agencies, and as such we have been working closely with emergency services, including Tasmania Police, throughout this process. Given the size of this event, these agencies have to be satisfied that the safety and good order of the community can be maintained. Council has taken the views of these agencies into account prior to making today’s decision.”

“Given the number of stakeholders involved in this event, and the timeframes associated with implementing various legislative requirements surrounding things such as road closures, the deadline for making this decision was 5pm Thursday 17 November. To extend the deadline any further would not be in the best interest of these stakeholders or the event.”

“Burnie’s waterfront was redeveloped to promote greater community utilisation of the area, and there is no doubt it is a fantastic location for events. We always welcome the opportunity for events to be held in this community space, as long as all the relevant requirements associated with staging events can be satisfied.  We would like to continue to work with Sets by the Sea to bring the event to Burnie at a later date.”
