School Holidays Activity - Burnie Try Skills Program

Grade 5-6 students will not be bored this school holidays, with the Burnie Try Skills Program offering some great opportunities for kids to get active.

The program aims to encourage active participation by young people in the sports provided by clubs and organisations in the Burnie region. The program is open to young people from grade 5 to 6 and is delivered by Outside the Square Solutions for Burnie City Council, over the third term school holidays.

The project has support from sporting clubs around Burnie including soccer, cricket, softball, archery, gymnastics, bowls, badminton, basketball, karate, boxing, surf club, hockey, rugby and tennis.

Friends of Fernglade have offered a couple of wildlife tours over the course of the program, and as of today, an Aussie Rules session is secured for Wednesday the 4th October with AFL Tasmania member and AFLW Player Emma Humphries from the Melbourne Demons, along with some Tassie Mariners players.

Mayor Anita Dow said, “The project targets grade 5-6 students to get more involved in local clubs and to find out what they might have to offer to the younger generation looking for a sport in which to get involved. With various activities that cover almost every day of the holidays and across different times for sessions, there should be an activity for everyone.”

Young people can also do multiple sessions with different activities. Many of the organisations involved have offered multiple sessions, so if they miss one day, they may be able to get it on a different day.
