MAYOR Anita Dow today tendered her resignation to the General Manager as Mayor and Alderman of Burnie City Council.

The announcement follows Mrs Dow’s earlier public statement that she intended to resign from the Office of Mayor in order to contest the upcoming State Election.

Anita Dow was first elected as an Alderman in October 2005.  She was elected as Deputy Mayor from November 2007 to October 2009, and served as Mayor of Burnie from October 2014 until 23 October 2017.

General Manager Andrew Wardlaw said “Under the provisions of the Local Government Act, Deputy Mayor Boyd will today assume the role of Acting Mayor up until the results of a by-election are declared.”

The Tasmanian Electoral Office has been notified of this resignation and will undertake the by-election for both the vacancies of Mayor and Alderman.  The time frames for the by-election are yet to be confirmed.
