Reminder to utilise Burnie waste token during March

The Burnie community are being encouraged to have a tidy up during March.

All Burnie properties received two waste tokens with their rates notice for a free trip to the Burnie Waste Management Centre on set weekends in September 2014 and March 2015.

Mayor Anita Dow said, “Following community feedback from the first successful free waste weekend in September 2014, Council acknowledged the need to create more flexibility and will now be accepting tokens throughout the whole month of March 2015 and also any unused tokens from September.”

Each token can only be used once and it allows a free visit to the Burnie Waste Management Centre for a car, van, ute and/or small trailer (no loads greater than four cubic metres). All items accepted except chemicals and asbestos. A maximum of four car tyres can be dropped off for free per token. Additional tyres will incur a fee.

“Don’t forget to take your token with you, as it must be handed over at the tollbooth. If you are renting, we encourage you to contact your property manager, who we hope will pass on the token. Housing and Housing Choices have also been supplied the tokens. The community are asked to contact these agencies to request their token,” Mayor Dow said.

The token scheme has been introduced to encourage the community to dispose of unwanted larger household items they have lying around home that don’t fit in the regular kerbside collection. Council would like to extend an invitation for service organisations to express their interest in becoming involved in this community initiative.

“The community expressed their need for a scheme like this. It was great to see the community embracing the recent extension with an increase of use of the tokens over the first week and long weekend in March. I do hope to see a further increase in the amount of tokens used over the next two weeks to confirm that the new free waste token scheme is a success,” she said.
