The Burnie Regional Art Gallery (BRAG) will be a hive of activity when three major photographic exhibitions open on Friday 8 February at 6pm.

Exhibition one: Somerset artist Con Rhee’s exhibition Painted Cliffs and Other Visual Magic will wind its way through the main gallery with images of Maria Island. This photographic journey is printed on floor-to-ceiling silk panels highlighting the island’s dramatic cliffs and landscape. Opening remarks will be by Peter Hughes – senior curator from the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG), Hobart.

Exhibition two: Walkley Award-winning Burnie photographer Grant Wells will share a beautiful collection of black & white portraits of people we know and love in People of Passion. Opening remarks will be by Corey Speers, communications and media consultant.

Exhibition three: BRAG is also thrilled to present Men With Heart: a visual and spoken journey that celebrates the twenty-first birthday of TASMEN, an organisation dedicated to supporting men in today’s challenging environment. The exhibition of photographs by Paul Hoelin and video by Troy Melville, showed to great acclaim in Hobart in late 2018. Opening remarks will be by father and son, Graeme Davis and Darvis Walker.

Burnie City Mayor Steve Kons said, “Photographic exhibitions offer insight into a single second, a story made in light and time. The late French photographer Marc Riboud said that taking pictures is savouring life intensely, every hundredth of a second. Each of the exhibitions opening at the gallery savour life, or celebrate people who savour life, intensely.”

Renowned jazz pianist Viktor Zappner will perform at the opening and all of the exhibitions will continue until Sunday 17 March. There is an extensive public program that will support the exhibitions and this can be viewed on BRAG’s social media pages.

The Burnie Regional Art Gallery is open free to the public from 10am to 4.30pm weekdays and from 1.30pm to 4pm Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Burnie Regional Art Gallery a Burnie City Council initiative and is assisted through Arts Tasmania by the Minister for the Arts.
