Permit granted to demolish 52 buildings on paper mill site

The Resource Management and Planning Appeals Tribunal today made a decision to grant a conditional land use permit to allow demolition of 52 buildings on the western area of the former paper mill site at South Burnie.

Mayor Steve Kons said, “The independent decision reflects careful consideration of all relevant planning issues, including the heritage value of the buildings.

“The tribunal concluded that no evidence of regulation required conservation of the buildings proposed for demolition.

“The buildings of substantial merit have been preserved from demolition.”

The two administration buildings and the five cottages are not included in the 52 buildings to be demolished.

“The detailed conditional permit ensures the demolition is undertaken without risk to the health and the safety of the community,” Mayor Kons said.

The permit to demolish the 52 buildings will assist Bunning’s with their proposal to redevelop on the site.
