One of Australia’s greatest storytellers kicks off 2013 season in Burnie

William Yang is one of Australia’s greatest storytellers.

His performance, The Story Only I Can Tell will begin the Burnie Arts & Function Centre’s performing arts subscription season for 2013 this Saturday, 2 February at 5pm.

Deputy Mayor Sandra French said, “This personal hour long performance, by Queensland-born, multi-award winning artist William Yang, explores his experience working as a freelance photographer documenting Sydney’s social life. His stories are paired with his images which makes them all the more powerful and unique.”

William Yang’s monologue also coincides with the new exhibition at the Burnie Regional Art Gallery in which he is also one of the senior artists. Made in China, Australia is a CAST touring exhibition curated by Greg Leong especially for Salamanca Arts Centre with support from the Burnie Regional Art Gallery. The exhibition and tour have received funding support through the Visual Arts and Craft Strategy Contemporary Touring Initiative, the Australia Council, Arts Tasmania and the Gordon Darling Foundation.

Director of the Burnie Regional Art Gallery and Burnie Arts & Function Centre Greg Leong said, “Sadness, arguably is William Yang’s most successful piece and was made into an award winning film by Tony Ayres in 1999. This piece can be seen in our new exhibition, Made in China, Australia at the Burnie Regional Art Gallery until March 3, 2013.

“I highly recommend that you hear William Yang’s stories and then visit the exhibition downstairs. What a unique opportunity to hear the stories behind his photos, his own stories. He also captured the famous in his work including the likes of Ita Buttrose, Patrick White, as well documenting the Gay Mardi Gras, and the AIDS epidemic.”

William Yang’s performance is free to all Friends of the Gallery and both our 2012 and 2013 subscribers. For ticket information, please contact the box office 6430 5850 (Mon - Fri. 9am - 5pm) or visit
