New date for street sports event

Can you ride a skateboard, scooter or BMX bike?

This Saturday, 11 May at 11am a free skateboarding, scooter and BMX bike competition will be held at the Burnie skate park.

The Know Your Odds Skate, Scoot and BMX Competition was scheduled for February but was cancelled due to bad weather.

Mayor Steve Kons said, “Burnie City Council is pleased to be able to support this event. This project is part of a partnership between the Devonport, Wynyard and Burnie Council’s along with the Tasmanian Government’s ‘Know Your Odds’ campaign. While this event is aimed at youth, this is a free, all ages event that welcomes all skill levels to participate.”

Registration to participate can be completed on the day. Please arrive by 10:30am or register now online at

Burnie City Council’s Youth Development Officer Karli Franks said, “This event is set to be a great day with lots of great prizes. I really encourage plenty of people to come along and spectate as our local talent showcase their skills and display the positive culture of street sports. Street sports are exciting, fast paced and fun to watch, with all three styles on display it promises to be an awesome day!

“There will also be a strong message on the day, from the Know Your Odds team, about the risks of gambling and distilling the misunderstanding that gambling is an easy way to make money.”

The competition will be split into heats according to age groups and sport. There will be some great prizes on offer from Red Herring and sponsor freebies. Food and drinks will be available and there will be live music.
