New Mayor to greet cruise ship

New Mayor Steve Kons will be robed and ready to greet over 2000 passengers this Friday, 4 November 2011 as the next cruise ship arrives in Burnie.

The Volendam will arrive early Friday morning into Burnie, with the first shuttle bus leaving the port at 8am. The ship will depart Burnie at approximately 5pm.

Mayor Steve Kons said, “I made a promise to greet the cruise ships and I will be there bright and early on Friday to meet the passengers and welcome them to Burnie.

“The cruise ships are a great benefit to the City and we need to accommodate the visitors and make sure they have a terrific time and hopefully make a return trip one day.”

It is estimated that the cruise ships provide a $7 million economic boost to the region each year.

“The cruise ships are an important and hopefully long term asset to Burnie. They provide invaluable opportunities for tourism and local businesses on the whole North-West Coast.

“I would like to acknowledge the many volunteers who work tirelessly each time a cruise ship is in dock,” he said.
