Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay

Burnie City Council has welcomed the announcement of the 15 batonbearers for the Burnie stage of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay.

Mayor Anita Dow said that most of the batonbearers had been selected through an open nomination process, however Council had been asked to nominate a person who had made a major contribution to the Burnie community and to sport.

“Council was pleased to nominate Keith Price due to his long involvement in our local community, as well as his role in sports participation, administration and coaching”, Mayor Dow said.

“Keith has made a significant contribution to sport and education within the Burnie community. As well as being a physical education teacher for 28 years and a swimming instructor 45 years, he has participated, administered or assisted in the organisation of the following community sporting initiatives:

   Chair - Burnie Swimming Club;
   President - Burnie Nippers Surf Club;
   Publicity Officer - Burnie 10;
   Founding Committee Member - Burnie Touch Football;
   Involvement in Burnie 3-2-1 Go;
   Australian Masters Games (Cycling and Rugby); and
   Professional Cross Country Club Tasmania”

Mayor Dow said that Mr Price had also been a long time champion of the Coastal pathway between Burnie and Wynyard.

“Keith has strongly advocated for the Coastal pathway for many years and I am pleased that his efforts, combined with Local Government advocacy on the importance of this project, will see construction commence in 2018”.

“I congratulate Keith, and all batonbearers selected to take part in the Relay when it arrives in February next year”.
