Free student workshop with the Australian Chamber Orchestra

Burnie is the host for the only String Workshop for students in Tasmania this year, as part of the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s ACO2 Tasmanian tour.

ACO2 is a smaller touring party, visiting Tasmania in October and has been described as the ACO’s precocious little sister. They will deliver the free workshop designed for secondary and advanced primary students at the Burnie Arts & Function Centre on Wednesday 17 October, however registrations close shortly.

Deputy Mayor Sandra French said, “This is a unique opportunity for our local musicians to gain new skills from professional musicians. We are lucky to have this workshop being hosted in Burnie and it’s free.”

Director of the Burnie Arts & Function Centre Greg Leong urged budding musicians to register quickly as the closing date for registration is nearing.

“Although the workshop is free you must register through your school before Friday 17 August. The registration form can be found on the ACO website or from the Burnie Arts & Function Centre Box Office counter.

“The String Workshop gives students the chance to be part of the ACO for a day, learning rehearsal and performance techniques used by Australia's top string players. The workshop will develop technical and ensemble skills and an understanding and interpretation of music.”

The thematically structured workshops are based around concepts such as listening, leading, breathing, blending and performance style.

Students from different schools will have the opportunity to combine and form a chamber orchestra with ACO players leading each of the sections. Students will learn to play in a conductor-less ensemble, culminating in an informal performance for family and friends.

String workshops are free of charge and run for three hours.

To apply for the free workshop, please download and complete an application form from the ACO website, or collect from the Burnie Arts & Function Centre Box Office and return via post to the ACO before Friday 17 August.
