Focus on smooth transition as single use plastics are phased out of Burnie events

Council recently passed a resolution to adopt a policy that bans single use plastics from council run events.

Burnie City Council Mayor Boyd said “there are legitimate concerns associated with single use plastics within the community and it is important that Council shows leadership in addressing these concerns.

“We understand that the implementation of this policy is far reaching and we will be working with our event stakeholders throughout the community over the coming months to ensure a smooth transition is achieved.”

The policy will apply to events that are organised by Council for the public and/or internally for council staff and Alderman); as well as council sponsored/supported events (those organised by others that have Council funding or involve use of council staff in support of event).

Council will also encourage the same for events held on council property/roads/buildings and will be taking a lead role in assisting and educating the public on how to implement their own Waste Management Event Plans.

Mayor Boyd said that the Council will consult with community groups and those providing services at Council events in developing the policy, as well as reviewing what other communities have done as an alternative to using single use plastics at events.
