Family History Week celebrated at Museum

To celebrate national Family History Week (27 July to 5 August), the Burnie Regional Museum is running free workshops.

Deputy Mayor Sandra French said, “The Museum holds a large amount of material relating to families in Burnie. Their photographic collection in particular is a fantastic resource for people who are searching for photos of their relatives.

“There are many of us who would like to start researching our family history, but don’t really know where to start. It can be overwhelming and seem like a daunting task. This is what Family History Week is all about.”

In association with the Family History Society (Burnie Branch), the Burnie Regional Museum is holding free workshops to provide some great tips and tools from family history experts.

There are three workshops available:

The first workshop is on Monday 30 July, 2pm to 3pm. This is a workshop on understanding online indexes of births, deaths and marriages. This workshop will be run by Peter and Judy Cocker from the Burnie Family History Society.

The second workshop will be held on Tuesday 31 July, 2pm to 3pm and provides tips and tools on caring for your family photos and documents. This workshop will be run by Patty Boxhall, Museum Consultant.

The final workshop to celebrate Family History Week will be held on Wednesday 1 August, 2pm to 3pm and will provide a beginner’s guide to family history research, run by Peter and Judy Cocker from the Burnie Family History Society.

Curator of the Burnie Regional Museum Georgia Luck said, “We hope those interested in researching their family history join us at the workshops.

“Our Museum holds some great material on Burnie families and when combined with the resources of the Burnie Family History Society, there is a wealth of information available to the community. We hope by celebrating Family History Week that we can raise awareness of another side to our Museum that is here for the community to utilise.”
