Council welcomes funding for CCTV camera expansion

Mayor Anita Dow has welcomed the announcement of funding towards the expansion of the CCTV cameral network in the Burnie CBD under the Commonwealth Government's Safer Communities Fund.

The funding of $74,772 was today confirmed by The Hon Michael Keenan, the Minister for Justice and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Counter-Terrorism.

Mayor Dow said that the funding had previously been announced as part of the 2016 Federal Election, but that Council was required to submit an application to support the commitment of funds.

"It is proposed to install 9 CCTV cameras along the Waterfront Boardwalk infrastructure between the West Park precinct and the Surf Club. Council has previously encountered incidents of vandalism to the LED lighting system in this vicinity."

"The installation of CCTV cameras on the boardwalk will also provide security and protection to the many pedestrians, UTAS students and visitors using the boardwalk."

"It is also proposed to install 4 additional fixed cameras in Cattley Street which will provide coverage of the bus area. Police have identified this area as a black spot in the current CBD CCTV coverage."
