Council purchases land at Wivenhoe Showgrounds

Council have today finalised a contract of sale to purchase a parcel of land at the Wivenhoe Showgrounds for $1.4 million.

Council currently owns the showgrounds north of the railway (approximately 5.3 hectares) and with this additional purchase of approximately 1.2 hectares now consolidates its land holdings at the site to almost 7 hectares of land.

Burnie City Council Mayor Steve Kons said he “congratulates Councillor Ken Dorsey for putting the matter before council.”

The acquisition allows council to secure occupancy on the site into the future for existing clubs such as the Gymnastics club and Burnie Harness Racing club. It also provides opportunities to meet other community needs.

Council will consider further options for the use of the site into 2019.
