Council entities

Mayor Steve Kons has stated that the recent article in the Advocate newspaper regarding the review of Council’s entities, may have given the wrong impression to the Burnie community, that all the Aldermen sought the cessation of Burnie Sports and Events (BSE).

Mayor Steve Kons said, “I expressed my own views, which I have held for a number of years. Over the last couple of weeks some of my fellow Aldermen and I have received questions from the community regarding the future of Burnie Sports and Events.

“All of Councils entities are operating currently as normal. I simply put across my opinion of these entities in the public domain, but I feel the need to clarify that my opinion is not necessarily the view of the whole Council.”

Council, after considering a recommendation from the Audit Committee to review Tas Communications, determined to undertake an internal review of all three entities (Tas Communications, Burnie Sports and Events and Burnie Airport Corporation). Council officers will undertake this review and Council will receive a report later this year.

“Reviewing all areas of Council operations is important. I think it’s great that we are going through this process to make sure that as a Council we are making the right decisions for the community. I think that some in the community may have thought that this was the outcome of the review, which is yet to be finalised.

“I would like to make it very clear that the entities of Council are currently operating as normal.

“The Rhapsody of the Sea cruise ship is visiting Burnie today and I have had a great time greeting the passengers. I thoroughly enjoy showcasing our city with the many volunteers and the staff of Burnie Sports and Events, who all work hard to look after the visitors,” Mayor Kons said.
