Burnie Youth Council met for the annual Youth Council election on Thursday 28th March.  The Youth Council is made up of 2 representatives from each of the 12 primary and secondary schools in the Burnie area.

The representatives in the Youth Council were invited to stand for one of the roles. Students presented a speech to the entire Youth Council stating why they wished to be elected in the role. The Youth Councillors then voted and the successful candidates were declared.

Burnie City Council is proud to announce this year’s elected members: Youth Mayor Iyanah Contractor (Parklands High School), Deputy Youth Mayor May Mitchell (Parklands High School) and Deputy Youth Mayor (Jnr) Imogen Lloyd (Burnie Primary School).

Burnie City Council Acting Mayor Giovanna Simpson said “I wish the new Burnie Youth Council all the best and I am so very excited that I am able to continue to work with these inspiring young people”.

Youth Mayor Iyanah Contractor said, “As youth mayor, I’m looking forward to the year ahead with my fellow council members. I’m honoured to be able to represent the young people in the Burnie area. I believe that we are in for an amazing year as the members on the youth council are creative and unique and all have something great to offer the community!”

Being involved in the Youth Council provides young people with real world understanding of Local Government and the running of Council. Representatives from each of the schools work together on common interests to achieve common goals. It gives rise to greater confidence and improves their leadership and public speaking skills.
