Community sessions to discuss vision for UTAS expansion in Burnie

The University of Tasmania will start a series of sessions next Monday (May 13) to discuss plans for the North West region and proposed campus expansion with the community.

The sessions are designed to outline the university’s future expansion plans, and provide an opportunity for people to raise their concerns or queries regarding the proposed West Park project.

“We are excited to share our vision with the community and set out how we hope to move forward,” UTAS Pro Vice-Chancellor (Regional Development) and Cradle Coast Campus Director Professor Janelle Allison said.

“The community has told us of some of their concerns surrounding the vision and we think it’s important to have these sessions so the community can ask questions and receive first-hand answers.

“We hope to keep these sessions reasonably informal to allow participants the opportunity share their views and discuss ideas or concerns.”

The information sessions are open to the community; however bookings are essential as numbers are limited to allow everyone present a chance to participate.

Each session will include a presentation from UTAS, followed by an opportunity for discussion and questions.

The first set of sessions will be held this Monday (May 13), at The Point West Park at 11am, 2pm, 4pm and 6pm. Bookings can be made by calling 6226 2521. Additional sessions will be scheduled in the coming weeks.

“I think it is great that UTAS are sharing their vision with the community,” Burnie City Council Mayor Steve Kons said.

“Council will also attend the sessions, to answer questions the community may have.”

A fact sheet, outlining aspects of UTAS’s vision and including details agreed to in the Heads of Agreement and information from the sessions, will be made available online for those who cannot attend.

“We have started consultation with the community to develop the Master Plan and we will communicate further opportunities for involvement through both the UTAS and Burnie City Council websites as they arise,” Professor Allison said.
