Community devastated by loss of Caterpillar manufacturing

Burnie City Council has expressed its disappointment and concern by today’s announcement by Caterpillar that it will be transitioning its hard rock vehicle manufacturing operations to Thailand.

Mayor Anita Dow said “The loss of Caterpillar manufacturing will have a major impact on both employees and businesses who supply Caterpillar.

“We have been aware from past announcements that transitioning would occur, however this does not take away from the impact of today’s announcement.

“Council appreciates that today’s announcement will have an enormous impact on many families within the community and we will work with both the company and other levels of government to provide as much support as possible.

“Council is extremely concerned about the future of local Caterpillar suppliers and calls on both state and federal governments to act swiftly to support manufacturing businesses in the region.

“We are encouraged by the announcement by Dale Elphinstone of planned activities that have the potential to provide continued economic benefits and employment for our region.
