The Burnie Youth Council is made up of representatives from each primary and secondary school in the Burnie area.

This morning the Youth Council met for the annual Youth Council election.

Burnie City Council Youth Development Officer Karli Reeves was proud to announce this year’s elected members: Youth Mayor Sarah Chamley (Hellyer College), Deputy Youth Mayor Senior Georgina Levett (Burnie High School) and Deputy Youth Mayor Junior Eliza Paul (Burnie Primary School).

“The representatives in the Youth Council were invited to stand for one of the roles. They had to present a speech to the entire Youth Council stating why they wished to be elected. They then voted and the announcement of the successful candidates was declared this morning.

“Being involved in the Youth Council provides young people with a real world understanding of Local Government and the running of Council. Seeing representatives from each of the schools work together is fantastic. It’s wonderful for their confidence and to improve their leadership and public speaking skills,” she said.

The Burnie Youth Council in the past has won gold and silver at the annual statewide Crimestoppers Challenge. They also established and run an annual art challenge each year.

“Through participating as a Burnie Youth Councillor we hope to further their skills to equip them to be outstanding achievers and community members. They could indeed become our future leaders.

“Their role is to speak to students at their schools and then communicate back to the Youth Council what the youth in Burnie need or are worried about. They are the voice for our youth. It’s a very important role,” Miss Reeves said.
