The Burnie Youth Council, consisting of representatives from all colleges, primary and secondary schools in the Burnie region, met today in the Burnie City Council Chambers and held their annual election.

Deputy Mayor Sandra French said, “The Youth Councillors were given the opportunity to stand for the position of Youth Mayor, Deputy Youth Mayor Senior or Deputy Youth Mayor Junior.

“The candidates were asked to prepare a speech and present it in front of the Youth Council. All the members then voted.”

It was announced this morning that Parklands High School student Chloe O’Neil was declared the Burnie Youth Mayor for 2012. Maddison Kelly also from Parklands High School was officially declared as the Deputy Youth Mayor Senior and Mason Waller from Burnie Primary School was voted in as Deputy Junior Mayor.

Burnie City Council’s Youth Development Officer Karli Reeves said, “I was blown away by the passionate well throughout speeches from all of the candidates. By holding an election it allows the students to gain an understanding of how local government operates.

“The Youth Council provides a voice for the youth of our city. Their ideas are then taken to the Aldermen. It’s so important that we keep in mind the voice of our youth when making decisions on the city. They have fabulous ideas worth hearing.”

The new Youth Mayor and Deputy Youth Mayors began their position directly after the election and held their first meeting this morning. The youth discussed the need for more rubbish bins and the desire for an indoor swimming pool.
