Burnie Tennis Court Funding

Burnie City Council has welcomed the news that funding has been secured for the Burnie Tennis Court upgrade.

Burnie City Council Mayor Anita Dow said, “Today’s announcement from Minister of Regional Development Fiona Nash and local member Brett Whiteley has been a long time coming, and we are excited by the prospect that the Burnie Tennis Courts will finally receive the upgrade needed to secure the return of the Burnie Tennis International.”

“Now that we have received funding commitments from both the Liberal and Labor parties, Council will now finalise the detailed designs and prepare tender documentation in preparation for Burnie once again hosting the Burnie Tennis International in 2017.”

“The Burnie Tennis International is such an important event for our city, with almost $1 million in economic benefit flowing back into the region. It is also an important event on the international tennis circuit. Players love coming to Burnie, and we love hosting them.”

“However, it is important to understand that this funding will not only sustain an annual event. The announcement today also included the future appointment of a regional tennis coach to work with the Burnie Tennis Club, which will create many opportunities for mentoring and junior development.

“The upgrade will lead to us becoming a regional tennis centre for the State, as well as enhancing Burnie’s opportunities to host more regional and national tennis events.”

“As a community we need to encourage health and recreation amongst our young people, and opportunities to excel in their chosen sport. This upgrade will ensure that there is a further critical piece of infrastructure to support these opportunities.”

“We thank all the stakeholders who have committed funding to this upgrade, including the State Government, Burnie Tennis Club and Tennis Australia and we are looking forward to works commencing in spring.”
