Burnie Shines launched with celebration

October just got brighter. Burnie Shines was officially launched this afternoon at Burnie’s surf club overlooking the waterfront. Event organisers from over 100 events as part of the month long festival joined together to reveal the full and colourful program.

Mayor Steve Kons said, “There was a real buzz at the launch and the program has some really creative and entertaining options for the month of October. There is something to do every day during October. It’s certainly going to be a busy time for me. I hope to head along to as many events as I can.”

This year’s Burnie Shines theme is based around fabric and the metaphor that a community is only as strong and remarkable as the individual threads within it.

Tourism and Marketing Manager Jenny Cox said, “Burnie could once have been described as a bolt of mid grey cotton drill with a strong blue collar and slightly fraying edges. Over time, beautiful and interesting threads have been woven into that grey fabric making it sparkle and enchant us, connecting us to it.

“I have been a part of the Burnie Shines adventure from the beginning and 12 years on and the transformation in Burnie is incredible. Burnie Shines is a fabulous example how a community working collectively can create something truly unique.

“The theme celebrates exactly that. Burnie Shines has woven together experiences from fibres offered by all parts of the Burnie community. There are threads for learning new skills, glittering threads for champagne filled exhibition openings and cocktail parties, colourful threads from the artists and visiting authors.

“There are lycra threads and running shoe laces, hessian, blossoms and paper. There are musical threads of classical guitars, jazz bands and community singing, theatrical threads of plays, performances and films and loud glittery threads of circus and burlesque.

“During Burnie Shines in October 2012 we encourage you to gather some threads and weave a little magic of your own,” she said.
