Burnie City Council announce Audit Committee members

At the April meeting, Council unanimously voted to establish a Burnie City Council Audit Committee. This position was taken after a successful Notice of Motion from Alderman Steve Kons to investigate the establishment of an Audit Committee.

A call for Expression of Interest was publicly advertised and a selection process was recently conducted.

Mayor Alvwyn Boyd said, “The objective of the Committee is to assist Council in providing a transparent and independent process in its financial management to ensure accountability to the community in the governance, management and allocation of resources.

“The Committee consists of five members, being two Aldermen and three independent members,” he said.

Alderman Steve Kons and Alderman Anita Dow were nominated as the two members sitting as Aldermen on the Committee.

“The Expression of Interest process called for independent members that possess accounting or related financial management experience and that have strong business acumen, management and communication skills.

“Council is thrilled with the outcome from the process and are pleased to announce Roger Martin as the Burnie City Council Audit Committee Chairperson and Lisa Dixon and Tony Moore as the two remaining Independent Members,” Mayor Boyd said.

Roger Martin graduated from the University of Tasmania in 1967 and has been a Fellow of CPA Australia since 1970. Roger has held many corporate positions in Tasmania including the CEO of the Cornwall Coal Company and Besser Tasmania. Roger was for many years General Manager Finance and Company Secretary of the Cement Australia Group. Until recently he was the Chairman of the Devonport City Council Audit Committee.

Lisa Dixon graduated from the University of Tasmania in 1998 and is a member of CPA Australia. Lisa has 16 years of experience in Local Government finance from working at Waratah Wynyard Council. Lisa left the Council in 2010 and is currently operating a part-time book keeping service in addition to the family building business.

Tony Moore is a Fellow of CPA Australia and is currently completing a Bachelor of Regional Resource Management at UTAS. Tony has held financial management positions in Tasmania with Comalco, APPM, Mt Lyell Mining and Railway Company, UMT and Tasports.

“The three successful candidates all possess the relevant skills and experience that was set out in the selection criteria. We are thrilled with the quality of candidates that applied. The successful candidates all have such a wealth of experience,” Mayor Boyd said.
