Burnie City Council Welcomes The Hermal Group to Burnie

The Burnie City Council has enthusiastically welcomed news that The Hermal Group will be investing $190m in Burnie to establish Australia’s largest plantation hardwood mill.

Mayor Alvwyn Boyd said that the announcement demonstrated confidence in the local economy and was great news for the long term sustainability and growth of the plantation forest industry in Tasmania.

“The announcement of 200 timber industry jobs along with the many construction jobs associated with a $190 million mill development, will be a massive lift to the Burnie region.”

“The Hermal development will further establish Burnie as a place to do business following LION consolidating its cheese processing for south eastern Australia at The Heritage facility in 2015, the Elphinstone Group expansion over recent years and the growth in the Burnie Port.”

Mayor Boyd said the forest industry had seen extraordinary growth in recent years. “Burnie is blessed to be surrounded by so much plantation resource, and the opportunities for value adding are enormous. We look forward to further opportunities being created in the coming years.”

“This is great news for Burnie, great news for the region and great news for Tasmania.”
