Heartbreak Hill and Dead Leg Swamp are just to name a few of the 14 obstacles part of Burnie’s brand new event, The Burnie Challenge.

The Burnie Challenge will be held at Shorewell Creek on April 10 and is part of the Healthy Communities Initiative that is set to help increase the Burnie community’s participation in healthy eating practices and lifestyles.

Commando from Australia’s Biggest Loser will be there on the day to motivate entrants to the end.

Personal Trainer from KickStart Fitness Sherry Rand said, “The course will be approximately 4 km’s. It will be the obstacles that will test your strength. With four weeks to go before the event I encourage the community to try and improve your strength and fitness. It will be of great benefit to your health and will also help you through the course.

“It’s important to remember this event is not a race. The aim is to see if you can battle through the course and make it to the finish. You can take as long as you like to complete the course.

“Everyone should have a go. It’s not just an event for athletes. The whole event will depend on teamwork and helping others through the course too,” she said.

The Burnie Challenge event is being supplemented by a number of cross training programs to assist participants to prepare for the event. Both the event and the training programs highlight the benefits of cross training, a healthy diet and nutrition.

Select local trainers are running free training sessions for anyone who holds health care card. Anyone else wanting to train for the event can attend these sessions for a discounted cost.

“All the local trainers have had a great response so far. We would love more people to take advantage of this great scheme particularly those who hold a health care card. What a great opportunity. My training group are already feeling fitter and healthier and ready for the challenge.

“I have heard people say they think it will be too hard. If you can walk up a flight of stairs then you have no excuse to give the challenge a go. I encourage the community to enter as a team. Grab the kids, have a go at the course, get dirty and have fun too.

“We are allowing ten year olds to tackle the course on their own. If they are younger they can still enter but they must enter as a team with a guardian. So if a ten year old can tackle it, then what is your excuse?

“You should word up your work friends, sporting club or family and get training today. Make sure you get your registration form in before the end of March,” she said.

Registration forms and full details can be found online or visit the Burnie City Council’s Offices at 80 Wilson Street.
