Bunnings gets the green light to commence project in Burnie

The Tasmanian Planning Commission has given approval to allow use and development of the site at the corner of Bass Highway and Reeve Street in South Burnie for a Bunnings store.

Mayor Steve Kons said, “We understand that the process has certainly had its challenges for Bunnings, but we are very pleased they worked with us to get through the process correctly and now can officially put out the welcome mat to their project.”

The Burnie Planning Scheme originally had the land in which Bunnings wanted to develop on as industrial use only.

“This was fine for its original purpose of the Australian Paper Mill, however for this area to progress the change in the scheme had to occur. We are pleased to announce that this has now been approved.

“We welcome development to Burnie, and we thank Bunnings for their confidence in our City and their patience with the system,” Mayor Kons said.

In October 2011, Council indicated its support for a change in provisions of the planning scheme, and granted a conditional permit.
