Burnie City Council has welcomed the news that Burnie is a possible location for a second interconnector between Tasmania and Victoria.
TasNetworks recently identified Burnie and Port Latta as potential sites for the interconnector as part of Project Marinus.
Burnie City Council Mayor Alvwyn Boyd said that “regardless of which site was selected, the interconnector would create incredible opportunities for the Cradle Coast region, opening up investment in pumped hydro and wind farms.
“Hydro Tasmania has indicated that its Battery to the Nation project, which involves interconnection with mainland Australia, will provide investment opportunities of over $5 billion and create 3,000 jobs in the North West.
“Our region can provide clean, reliable and affordable energy to the rest of the nation.
Mayor Boyd said that “this investment was dependent on the acceptance of the National Energy Guarantee at the COAG Energy Council on Friday.
“I sincerely hope that all states and political parties will come to an agreement on national energy policy, to provide certainty for investment, and to unlock the huge potential for growth in our region”, Mayor Boyd said.
