Aquatic Centre information session

The community is invited to attend a short information session regarding the exciting future of the Burnie Aquatic Centre this Saturday 12 October at 10am at the centre in Terrylands, Burnie.

Burnie City Council were thrilled to receive a $3 million promise from the Liberal Party in August to go towards an $8 million aquatic facility, including a 25 metre indoor swimming pool.

Mayor Steve Kons said, “The information session also marks the first day of the 2013/14 aquatic centre opening hours for the warmer months.”

Mayor Steve Kons praised the efforts of the Aquatic Centre Working Group in being instrumental in moving the project forward.

“It has always been clear that the Burnie community have been asking for an indoor option and upgraded facility for years. As time went on it became apparent that our community would not be able to afford the ongoing cost of a large indoor centre.

“The Working Group continued to workshop ideas on how the community could both achieve and afford a new facility. The suggestion to create an indoor eight lane 25 metre learn to swim and lap pool, still utilising the current outdoor 50 metre pool, opposed to a complete large indoor facility, was smart thinking and gained funding from the Liberal Party and Council.”

Council have agreed to contribute $2 million to the project, however Mayor Kons said that a commitment of $3 million was still required from the State Government to ensure the project can go ahead.

“It is important that we demonstrate that this is a project that the whole community backs. We encourage the community to take advantage of this information session to find out how they can support this project,” Mayor Kons said.
